About Mānowai O Hanakahi

Mānowai o Hanakahi (MOH) is traditionally an environmental summer experience designed for middle and high school youth. A place-based and hands-on learning program, participants learn by working with UH Hilo staff and researchers, community members, and agency partners.

Program experiences aim to: inspire & nurture interest in the natural sciences through place-based relevant programming; share the unique ecosystems of Hawaiʻi; provide exposure to ʻāina-based pathways & careers; provide skill-building and service learning experiences that benefit our environment and communities. Mānowai o Hanakahi camps and courses are rooted in the native Hawaiian values of aloha ʻāinamālama ʻāina, kuleana, ʻohana and laulima

Our Program Goals

1. Increase the stewarship ethic of participants

2. Inspire and nurture interest in the natural sciences

3. Provide place-based engaging opportunities for participants to learn about and from the ʻāina

4. Develop skill-building and service learning experiences that benefit our environment and     communities

5. Showcase pathways to conservation careers

Our Approach

The multi-generational pedagogy utilized by Mānowai o Hanakahi enagages youth in the process of knowing place by understanding their suroundings through a variety of lenses. Participants learn to better understand the landscape via hands-on service learning, observation skills, scientific tools, as well as community and literary resources. Program activities encourage critical thinking, the application of science concepts and teamwork for optimal success. MOH opportunities seek to help students to increase their stewardship ethic, civic engagement and confidnece while gaining new skills.
