Project MAʻA was a year-round Mānowai O Hanakahi opportunity during the 2016 - 2017 school year for Big Island students in grades 7th - 12th. Participants in Project MAʻA learned: the importance and process of conserving marine resources, different methods for communicating their experience, and about careers (and other pathway opportunities) related to marine conservation. Project MAʻA was made possible through a NOAA Marine Education & Training mini-grant.

Participants were paired with a UH Hilo student or other mentor for guidance in designing and implementing a project (marine research, outreach messaging, or career pathway project) while gaining skills in marine science and conservation. Participants selected an audience to share their experience with during the second phase of the project.
